UK Work Visa Categories

There are several types of UK visas that allow you to work legally or gain professional experience, depending on your purpose and circumstances. The main categories include the sponsorship-based Skilled Worker visa, the cultural exchange Youth Mobility Scheme, the T2 Minister of Religion visa for religious work, and the Graduate visa for post-study employment and job seeking.

Skilled Worker Visa

A primary work visa for those employed in specific roles by a UK Home Office-approved sponsor. Applicants must have a job offer in an eligible occupation, meet the minimum salary threshold, and demonstrate English language ability at B1 level or above.

A wide range of occupations and job codes are eligible, each with different salary requirements and conditions. Fields include healthcare, social care, IT, engineering, and more. Some roles benefit from reduced salary thresholds or additional tradeable points. The full list of eligible occupations and codes is available on the UK government website.

The Skilled Worker visa can be granted for up to five years. After five continuous years in the UK, holders can apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR). Dependants (spouse and children) can also join the main applicant. However, as of 2025, the UK government is actively planning to extend the ILR residency requirement from five to ten years. If implemented, Skilled Worker holders may need to extend their visas for an additional five years before becoming eligible for settlement.

Youth Mobility Scheme

A cultural exchange visa for foreign nationals aged 18 to 30 or 35, allowing up to two years of living and working in the UK. Annual quotas apply for each country. During the stay, you can work, take part-time jobs, and travel freely, but some occupations—such as professional sports—are restricted. Dependants are not permitted. Applicants must show proof of at least £2,530 in savings held for 28 consecutive days. This visa does not lead to settlement.

For nationals of South Korea, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand, the upper age limit is 35. For other eligible nationalities, it remains at 30.

Graduate Visa

For Student visa holders who have successfully completed a UK bachelor’s degree or higher. This visa allows up to two years (three years for PhD graduates) of unrestricted work or job searching in the UK. No sponsorship is required, and most forms of work are permitted, including full-time, part-time, and self-employment. While the Graduate visa does not itself lead to ILR, it offers an opportunity to switch to a long-term route such as the Skilled Worker visa to build qualifying residence.

T2 Minister of Religion Visa

For those taking up a leadership role in a church or faith-based organisation, such as preaching, pastoral care, religious education, or leading worship. Requires a Certificate of Sponsorship from an approved religious organisation, English at B2 level or above, and proof of at least £1,270 in maintenance funds. The visa can be granted for up to three years and extended thereafter. Continued employment in this role can lead to ILR, and dependants can accompany the main applicant.

Because each UK work visa category has different requirements and procedures, the key to a successful application is choosing the right visa and preparing thoroughly. We recommend working with an adviser authorised by the Immigration Advice Authority (IAA) under the UK Home Office to ensure accurate preparation, documentation, and strategy.
